One could live in them year around. But in addition to this, the location could not have been better. I just completed my third trip to Odessa in the past 4 years. Living in Russia, Odessa is a getaway vacation place for me and as usual it was awesome. There were more than a few RWLers or those of kindred spirit around as there was a European Connection Social taking place at the time. I've never been to a social having been scared away by many of the comments I've heard here, (and never will go now that I am happily committed) but everybody I spoke to that was there spoke favorably upon it, including one gentleman who told me he has now been to 36 socials
(GULP!)

I write this post for two reasons, one a warning, one a recommendation.
First the good.

I read a recent referral on this list for an apartment in Odessa and since I'm not much one for research, just followed up on it. To say I was impressed is an understatement.

Natasha Varetskaya who owns the Adam and Eve marriage agency has a 4 unit apartment "hotel" right on the main central walking street that is absolutely fabulous. For reference, I've stayed in apartments and hotels all over the FSU, so I"m not just writing this as somebody who had his low expectations minimally exceeded. EAch of the units was big, completely modern, ultra clean, very well furnished and decorated with lots of innovated touches, and in a true Odessa luxury for those in the know... equipped with a quite effective air conditioner. Having my laundry and ironing done for me daily for free was a pretty nice touch also. I think her prices ranged from $55 - $70 per night. Surely there are less expensive places in Odessa as surely as there are more expensive places, but for those looking for something in the first class range C the prices seemed very reasonable to me.

I'm not qualified to tell you about her marriage agency services, but based on a few girls I saw walking out of her office, I have a hunch she's pretty good in this area also.

Now the warning. It's probably nothing new to most here, and it's just a simple anecdote and certainly doesn't indict a race of people but it's worth sharing nonetheless. For those that have never been, Odessa is nothing short of remarkable in the percentage of stunning girls it has and the modest clothes they tend to wear. I was in an internet cafe one afternoon and had one of the most striking girls I ever saw sit next to me. Even in Odessa, she stood out. As evil as it is and as much as I would not appreciate somebody doing it to me, I couldn't help but notice all the ICQ messages that were popping up for her. (hard to ignore that stupid little sound that has i nfiltrated every office in Russia). It didn't take much glancing to see that she was engaged to two different men, one from Italy who was desparately trying to find out the information needed for her visa, and the other in Austria. Of course, these were just the two online at this time. I forced myself to stop looking but the sinking feeling remained. Perhaps it is the guys who are playing her, or perhaps it is just two lonely men (and possibly others) who she is playing. Either way, something pretty awful was happening. Draw your own moral or conclusions, but somewhere in there has to be something about not letting a girl's youth and beauty overcome your God Given brains.

Just some thoughts.

I just sent flowers to a girl this morning about 1AM Eastern Standard time using www.adam-and-eva.com.

I used them in the past and they were excellent.

Today I sent 9 roses in a vase arrangement for only $41.00 with 3 photos. They arrived the same day and this afternoon I received 3 pics of my girl. I gave them the wrong address and the phone didn't work but they still found the right location and were very prompt.

What can I say but they are the best in the business. I used to pay $100 for the same thing with another company. But this is much better. And so much faster using locals.

For the foreigner wishing to meet a Ukrainian woman, there is absolutely no one more capable, intelligent, honest and harder working in Ukraine, than Natasha in Odessa, e-mail, navar@paco.net (Andrei is the best in Moscow, Irina is great in St. Petersburg). Although, I will say that Masha in Sevastopol is closing in on a strong second place. Natasha lived and studied in America for several years, so her English is of native quality. Gentlemen, I'm the Dave Eggen that Natasha spoke about. She's been really fantastic to me. She helped me smoke out a scammer in Odessa and saved me a lot of money. I used her service for a hotel in Odessa, mail delivery, and other things and I have never been disappointed. I don't believe all agencies are scam artists, and I really resent such posts as Jim's about the city of Kharkov, the agencies of Kharkov, and especially the women of Kharkov. Guys, use your heads for something besides hatracks. There are a hell of a lot of really great people over there. Just like here, there are also people who will take advantage of you, but they're in the minority, just like here. I had one of, if not the best time of my life in Ukraine, I'd go back in a heartbeat, have even considered moving there if I can ever figure out how a salesman with very limited ability in Russian could eat. Natasha from Adam and Eva makes a valid point. Use these archives to find out what agencies you can trust. I wish I knew about RWL before I started my search ... it would have saved me much heart ache and money. Someone once said "a fool and his money are soon parted." If you chose not to read the advice of men that have gone through the experience first hand and learn from them, then you should expect to make a lot of mistakes.

By the way, Nastasha is a jewel. She takes your interests personally and gives better service than any business you will deal with in the States. If you don't find your lady on any of her sites, she can still help you with coorespondence, trips, deliveries, etc.

About Natasha ... She is well educated, PHD and former professor at Odessa University. She also has first hand experience with the US fiancee visa process. Although each country is different, her experience and knowledge is very valuable, especially about navigating through Ukraine requirements. On a side note regarding education. I have a personal friend who is head master for Foreign Studies at Fairfield University in the United States. She routinely has graduate exchange students from Russia and the Ukraine. I had dinner with 2 students last week. One from Dnepropetrovsk and one from Lviv. Degrees earned in Ukraine at the major universities are usually granted the equivalent degree in the US. The Ukraine and Russian education system is top notch. These people are every bit as intelligent as anyone from the West. If ... or better yet ... when the economy improves in Ukraine, these people will be notable competitors to all of us.

Back to Nastasha. I have used her services extensively in Odessa and used her services through her network in Kiev and Kharkov. Her apartment in the residential neighborhood is excellent. Modern, clean, its own heat, hot water, and air conditioning ... the thought of cockroaches is laughable. I would invite anyone to stay there. She also has a new apartment in center city which I am sure is equally as nice. Natasha will take your visit personally and exceed your expectations. She provides better service then any country I have been to ... including my own. We could take lessons from her. Most importantly, you won't find a more honest person to deal with. Her fees are also very reasonable. The help I have received from her contacts in other cities has been equally good.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I have been there, seen it, done it. I have been scammed, cheated, and deceived before I met Nastasha. In my opinion, you will be more than satisfied if you use her services.

On a closing note ... if you find a special woman in Ukraine be prepared to meet your equal at the very least. These are proud, intelligent, wonderful people rich in history and culture. If someone asked me what country was better, America or the Ukraine, I could not answer. Both countries have outstanding qualities. We are not better, just different.
